About us

Kindred Studios first opened in Kensington in 2015 and has since supported over 350 professional artists and makers.

Kindred Studios brings together a very diverse group of talented makers, each of whom have been chosen for their distinct expression and total commitment to their practice. Our artists are encouraged to develop their unique voice whilst actively taking an interest in other artists’ practices. Founder, Angelique Schmitt, describes the Kindred community as a creative coral reef which needs nourishing and protecting. “For art to continue to be relevant and to survive, it needs to give voice to many communities, each with their own approaches and aesthetic sensibilities.”

Kindred encourages its individuals to develop their uniqueness but work as a collective to build resilience through professional development and shared creative networks that deliver real opportunities. Kindred’s ethos embodies a culture of kinship, which is built through frequent gatherings and sharing.

Our long-term goals are to continue to help develop productive future-proof creative communities with core values of mutual respect and support. Kindred Studios artists and makers are living these values and making a difference for each other and for our many local communities.

Our space

Since 2020 Kindred Studios has found its home in Shepherd’s Bush, West London. We currently have 67 maker spaces, a communal café, garden, a gallery and a project space.

Our lease at our current location will be up in late Spring 2024 and we are currently searching for our next home. If you are a landlord or a developer looking for meanwhile or permanent tenants, please get in touch.

Our community

Through frequent (but never forced!) interactions, such as communal lunches, weekly artist studio tours, pop-up exhibtions, private views, artist talks, gardening and so much more…and over time, Kindred artists naturally bond and form a creative community where everyone knows each others’ names. This good energy feeds our creative processes, grows our networks and we in turn connect with other communities on the outside and work together to make positive changes.

Our events

Kindred prides itself with connecting people through art, music and food. We have two super-dynamic and hugely popular Open Studios each year as well as talks, workshops, gong sessions, drumming circles, exhibitions and so much more that it would be too long to list! Our events are complimented by our very own vegetarian café.

If you want to want to find out more about our events- sign up here to receive our biannual newsletter. We respect your inbox and won’t be emailing you frequently.

Our future

Our long-term goals are to create permanence for our project across London and the UK so that we can continue to help develop productive future-communities with core values of mutual respect and support. Kindred Studios artists and makers are living these values and making a difference for each other and for our many local communities by inspiring others to be part of a more connected and caring society.

“For art practices to be relevant and to thrive, creative collectives need to represent and give voice to many communities, each with their own approaches and aesthetic sensibilities.'
