Partners

Since its inception, Kindred Studios has evolved as a nomadic project which has allowed it to develop organically to respond to the real needs of artists. Kindred has been compared to a coral reef and this metaphor extends beyond the studios to the way we partner with other organisations, businesses, colleges and councils. We work within a culture of generosity and responsibility; our partners share our vision and aim to add value to a range communities.

Developers

We work with landlords and developers to secure creative workspaces in a number of different ways:

Meanwhile use which offers developers rates mitigation and the knowledge that their buildings are supporting vital creative industries whilst invigorating the local community.

Section 106 allowing Kindred’s ethos of Arts and engagement to enrich the development’s feel and culture.

Long-term, low cost leasing for which we develop strong local impact and transform the locality.

And we are now also looking to work with a partner interested in developing an Eco Artist Village, offering live/work space in the UK. This is the natural conclusion to the huge demand for artists workspace combined with the progressive culture-building which we nurture. Colleges, schools and students

Our award-winning education programs partner with local colleges to provide support for young emerging artists. We provide studios tours and work experience for local creative students in Key Stage 5 (age 16-19) which expose them to a wide range of practices. Selected students demonstrating interest and potential are offered opportunities to work alongside an appointed mentor in the studio. Skills learned include portfolio development, curation, technique, entrepreneurship and career planning. Every artist at Kindred Studios voluntarily offers work experience; these creative connections foster strong bonds and support both students and the creatives who are guided through the process of mentoring.

Social Prescribing & Community Groups

Kindred is proud to support local health care organisations as they connect people to creative activities that meet the social and emotional needs of local communities.

Groups from Imperial Health and Headway regularly enjoy art classes in Kindred's beautiful project space. These sessions provide support and healing through group therapy away from the hospital environment. Kindred also hosts community groups that are struggling to find affordable space for their activities and rehearsals. In the last year we have provided space to the Mending Club, Victims of Domestic Abuse, From the People for the People, The London Bulgarian Choir and rehearsal space for the notorious Portobello Panto. We regularly offer community drumming circles, figure drawing sessions and live music nights.

Councils

Our founder Angelique Schmitt believes it is important to recognise the potential that creative communities have as a powerful culture starter.

Kindred Studios work with local councils to celebrate the artists within their boroughs and attract broader audiences than is usual in galleries. Our free bi-annual Open Studios Weekends regularly welcome over 3000 members of the public, enabling everyone to engage with art and music through free workshops and family events. The public can get to know their local artists and familiarise themselves with the processes involved in creating art.

We continue to work with local boroughs to deliver on their cultural strategy and are particularly open to conversations relating to vacant buildings and high streets in need of revival.
